Walking on the water, the experience of Peter

The biblical tradition should be widely known.

When Jesus suddenly walked on the water at night had greatly frightened the disciples in the boat, the disciple Peter, known as a daredevil, quickly became the real Peter again. He boldly asked Jesus to invite him out on the water, which Jesus did. But when Peter then looked at the threatening waves, his courage left him and he began to sink and could only utter a cry for help.

My parallel experience

It began last night after Shabbat began. Before I went to bed, I took a look at the new Shabbat candle I had lit about 4 hours ago. It was filled to the brim with liquid wax, which set my heart aflutter, and I heaved a sigh, thinking of Peter and his embarrassment.

In the morning, oh the horror! The candle was indeed overflowing. It immediately came to me at the sight of it, “Thy will be done!” And I felt justifiably blame.

My lesson learned.

Next time I will not say lightly, “Thy will be done,” but seek the face of God and check my head for God’s secret-science language.

Jesus and the sinking Peter on the lake.
Matthew 14:

22 And straightway Jesus drove his disciples, that they should enter into the ship, and pass over before him until he should let the people go from him.
23 And when he had sent the people away, he went up into a mountain by himself to pray. And in the evening he was there alone.

24 And the ship was already in the midst of the sea, suffering distress from the waves; for the wind was contrary to them.

25 But in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were afraid, saying: It is a ghost! and cried out for fear.

27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

28 And Peter answered him, and said, Lord, if it is thou, let me come unto thee on the water.
29 And he said, Come hither. And Peter came out of the ship, and walked on the water, that he might come unto Jesus.

30 And when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid, and began to sink, and cried out, saying, Lord, help me.

31 And Jesus straightway put forth his hand, and took him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, why didst thou doubt?

32 And they entered into the ship, and the wind ceased.
33 And they that were in the ship came and fell before him, saying: Truly you are the Son of God!
