Martin Luther – Yehoshua Senn

I, Yehoshua, am equal to Martin Luther.

“Bereshit bara Elohim et haSchamaim we et haArez.” “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

The first verse in the Bible reads, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” In Hebrew, the poem sounds like this, “Bereshit Bara Elohim et Ha`Schamaim Ve`et Ha`Aretz” -.

בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ

This verse is made up of seven simple words in the Hebrew Bible text that we still use today in everyday colloquial speech in Hebrew. For the term Bereshit for beginning, where in the word Bereshit we also find the word syllable for head – Rosh, because the head is the beginning of our body. Bara for creating. Elohim for God, Elohim being in itself a plural. Or the word Shamaim for heaven, where the word water Maim is also included in Shamaim. For heaven and air are made of water. In the vernacular Aretz is the land, but in the first verse of the Bible and in the following ones this word is understood to mean the earth, world, or planet. For God created the earth in six days, or did God create only or first the Promised Land in six days? By the way, there are interesting Bible interpretations of this. Also, I have not forgotten the et after Elohim. It is written with the first and last letter, so Alef (א) and Tav (ת). Therefore, we can also read, “In the beginning, God created Alef and Tav, the beginning and the end.”

The Hebrew language is full of secrets and valuable ideas hidden in it, which we do not immediately glimpse and understand the first time we read the Bible, but sometimes only after the hundredth time. To get closer to this knowledge, we thought of presenting the Hebrew language live from Jerusalem, especially when we will probably all spend the summer months at home. True, after one semester you will not yet be able to read the Bible in Hebrew, but you will get to know Hebrew words that will move you to new insights in the Bible.

For this reason, we offer you for the first time an interactive Hebrew course. Here you can take your first steps in Hebrew and be in contact with us and other readers and friends.
